The Trump White House asserted an “unprecedented” role in the review of a damning manuscript from former Trump national security adviser John Bolton, according to a senior career official who said she was speaking out to “set the record straight” about her work and to ensure there’s no political taint in the process of reviewing books before they are published.

In a letter to Bolton’s counsel and the Justice Department late Tuesday, Davis Polk & Wardwell partner Kenneth Wainstein gave a detailed account of the White House review on behalf of the career official, Ellen Knight.
