Ethan Davis, a top U.S. Justice Department official overseeing the defense of Trump administration policies in court, plans to step down next week as the acting head of the civil division.

Davis rose to lead the Justice Department’s civil division in June following the departure of former Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt, whose resignation came as a surprise to many within the department. A former clerk to Justice Neil Gorsuch, Davis had served since the summer of 2019 as Hunt’s top deputy.
