The University of Pennsylvania on Nov. 8 unveiled that it has received the largest donation to a law school of record and a new moniker, but not everyone is thrilled with the prospect of telling people they attend or graduated from “Carey Law.”

More than 500 students and alumni so far have signed a petition asking administrators to retain Penn Law as the shorthand for the law school, even though it is now officially the University of Pennsylvania Carey School of Law after the W.P. Carey Foundation gave it $125 million. According to Penn’s updated style guide, the official shorthand for the law school is either “Carey Law” or “Carey Law School,” replacing the longtime Penn Law nickname. The official shorthand is used on law school merchandise and documents, among other things.
