This week we’re focused on the lack of diversity in Big Law, where just 8 percent of partners are minorities.

Law.com reporter Meghan Tribe talks with Sandra Bang, Shearman & Sterling’s first chief diversity and talent strategy officer, whose recent appointment to the position is part of a trend in which large law firms—including Cleary Gottlieb; Fisher & Phillips and Locke Lord—are putting diversity officers in C-Suite roles.

Diversity advocates say the ability of these professionals to be a part of firm leadership is critical to effecting any real change within major law firms, which are under increasing pressure from clients and from within to hire and promote more minority lawyers.
