In his career as a white-collar lawyer, Winston & Strawn partner Abbe Lowell has counseled some of the nation’s most powerful political figures in their weakest moments. He counts U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards and disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff as former clients and is currently representing President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner in connection with probes into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Then there’s that case he tried recently on behalf of Hamlet … (“One of my more interesting and psychologically complex clients, I have to say.”)

In this episode of Legal Speak, Lowell speaks with Jenna Greene, editor-in-chief of The Litigation Daily, about where he started his legal career, why clients seek him out, and how he approaches his biggest cases.

Lowell shares his views on impeachment—informed by his experience representing House Democrats during impeachment proceedings against then-President Bill Clinton—and explains why he thinks the Justice Department made a “profound mistake” in prosecuting Menendez, a Democratic senator from New Jersey.

Lowell also discusses the decision to move his Washington, D.C.-based white-collar and investigations practice from 4,000 lawyer Norton Rose Fulbright to Winston & Strawn.
