It’s difficult to tell lately where we are in the arc of the pandemic story. On one hand, spikes in new cases and hospitalizations in many parts of the country paint a grim picture. On the other hand, promising recent news that a vaccine might be available as early as spring elicit something resembling hope—a sense that the pandemic could be brought to bear in a definable timeline.
