When you read about the legal industry, whether it’s news articles or surveys or banking reports, it’s sometimes easy to get the impression that the top of the Am Law 100 is running away with all the work and money, and everyone else is lucky to still be in businesses.

Those of us who have been covering the business of law for years know it’s not true. I’ve been hearing for at least 20 years how there’s going to be this grand consolidation, and there will be a handful of giant firms and then a bunch of boutiques, and a lot of firms, particularly large regional firms, will either get subsumed by bigger firms or break apart. It hasn’t happened.
