Back in the 1980s, my colleague Larry Smith attended a panel discussion called “Strategic Growth for Large Law Firms” or something to that effect. On the dais the managing partners of four of the world’s largest law firms were discussing best practices of law firm acquisitions. Yet as far as Larry could ascertain, the sizable audience consisted wholly of midsize firms. They weren’t there to learn how to gobble up. They were there to get gobbled.
