For many years, midsize firms gained a foothold in the effort to compete with big law. A 2013 Washington Post article discussed a LexisNexis report which demonstrated that “[t]he share of U.S. legal fees paid by clients to firms with more than 750 lawyers shrank from 26 percent to 20 percent from 2010-2013. During the same period, firms with 201 to 500 lawyers saw their portion grow to 22 percent from 18 percent.”

During the last several years, however, the industry has seen a major shift. Big firms keep getting bigger. Mergers and acquisitions have continued, and there now exists a great divide between the Am Law 1-50, 51-100, Am Law 200, and midsize firms.
