A federal jury in West Virginia on Thursday found medical technology manufacturer C.R. Bard liable for injuries caused by its vaginal-mesh implant. The jury awarded plaintiff Donna Cisson $2 million in compensatory and punitive damages in the first bellwether trial in massive federal multidistrict litigation over the allegedly defective implants.

The case is one of 8,000 that Bard faces related to its line of Avaulta devices used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence in women. Plaintiffs claim the devices erode, causing organ damage and making sexual intercourse painful.
