Our friends at The American Lawyer published their annual rundown of the top hires in Big Law last week as part of a broader package of stories exploring the market for lateral partner hiring last year.

According to data from Law.com Compass, Am Law 200 firms hired 3,349 lateral partners from Oct. 1, 2022, through Sept. 30, 2023—about 7% fewer than the 3,633 hires in the year prior, but still a significant tick up from the 3,066 recorded in 2021. The bottom line is a lot of firms still have lateral hiring as a significant part of their growth strategies and a lot of partners are still on the move, including litigators. The package also includes an interesting peek behind the curtain of the legal recruiting industry from Dan Binstok, a partner at attorney search firm Garrison, and some analysis gauging the success of big hires from the past couple of years from my colleague Patrick Smith.
