Late last year I said in a column that I’d have my eyes on the intersection of artificial intelligence and the law in 2024. That’s a space that the folks at Burford Capital were clearly already bird-dogging.

Back when I wrote my column, Chris Bogart, the CEO of the litigation finance firm, had told Puck News about some of Burford’s experimentation with data analytics and machine learning. “Whenever we do investments, obviously, we have lawyers who come in and look at the law and so on. But we also have a whole team of pure data scientists,” he said. “We’re using all these data tools, and it’s made a significant difference in our investment quality. It’s an important part of what we do.”
