From 2010 to 2019, in the years leading up to the global pandemic, the city of Chicago averaged 23,000 eviction cases per month. In those cases, 81% of landlords were represented by attorneys, compared to only 11% of tenants. Tenants who actually showed up to court got an average of 90 seconds to present their cases.
