Cornerstone Research reports plaintiffs filed 112 new class action securities cases in federal and state courts in the first half of 2021, 25% fewer than in the second half of 2020. Despite the overall dip, there were 14 federal filings involving special purpose acquisition companies in the first half, twice as many as there were all of last year.

That SPAC litigation wave might just be upon us.
A new report from Cornerstone Research out this morning tallied 14 federal securities class actions involving special purpose acquisition companies in the first half of 2021. That might not sound like a ton, but it’s twice the number of securities suits involving SPACs as Cornerstone Research and its partners at Stanford Law School tracked in their Securities Class Action Clearinghouse for the entire year in 2020.
