Following what seems like a wave of U.S. state laws enacted to bolster consumer privacy rights, the Chicago City Council will soon consider a city-level ordinance to clamp down on personal data misuse and mishandling for city residents.

The ordinance in its current form would give Chicago residents the right to “opt in” to a company’s use and distribution of their personal information rather than requiring them to opt out, a standard similar to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
