The Supreme Court in India is hearing arguments this week about whether the right to privacy is an absolute right—and the outcome could impact both residents and businesses.

The arguments stem from the use of Aadhaar, a controversial identity number system. “Aadhaar is a unique identity number issued to all residents of India based on biometric and demographic data,” Vikramaditya Khanna, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, explained to Legaltech News. “Over 1.1 billion people in India have an Aadhaar number, making it the world’s largest biometric ID system.”
