Five years ago, CodeX at the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics held its first FutureLaw event in a small corner of Stanford Law School’s campus. The event, as this year’s attendees recalled, was very academic, featuring lots of “pie in the sky” speculation about potential technology “disruptions” to legal services.

In 2017, however, the FutureLaw event is much larger. Rather than looking theoretically at legal technology disruption, speakers and panelists started to grapple with some of the practical challenges raised by emerging legal technologies. Here, the five panels during the event centered primarily on the different lenses through which lawyers, legal operations staff, and technologists approach legal technology.
