Law department operations (LDO) as a business imperative is not new. Yet it remains uncharted territory for most as companies look to define these roles as they relate to vendor management and litigation support systems and technology, among other critical operational functions. But in the decade since LDO first began sprouting up within organizations, LDO efforts have become more strategic and long-term.

For evidence, look no further than the 8th annual Law Department Operations Survey: 35 percent of law departments have a formal legal department technology strategy or three-year road map, and another 49 percent say they plan to develop one. (This is a notable increase from 2014, when only 23 percent said they had a road map and 37 percent said they plan to develop one.)
