There is an increasing trend for governments to propose or enact bills that give law enforcement and intelligence officials more access to private communications. But these initiatives have led to a chorus of concern from the tech sector and privacy advocates.

For instance, earlier this week Apple criticized a UK-proposed Investigatory Powers bill in a document sent to the British Parliamentary Scrutiny Committee. Apple warned that the bill could impact “the personal data of millions of law-abiding citizens,” as it tries to give access to officials to private communications if terrorism or other activity is suspected.
