Due to the media circus that typically follows such events, data breaches facilitated by hackers and other outside entities have come to dominate the CySec conversation. However, organizations are also at considerable risk from having data pilfered by insiders. Verizon’s 2015 Data Breach Investigation Report indicates that as many as 20.6 percent of identified data breaches are perpetrated by insiders, and those are only the instances that were materially damaging enough to raise the alarm.

Insider threats raise new concerns about how information is stolen from firms. Disgruntled employees may know precisely where to hit the company, for example, and for law firms, the theft of sensitive data from clients can result in deterioration of that relationship and a sullied reputation in the marketplace.
