Every January 28th, the U.S. and other countries mark Data Privacy Day, an international effort to spread awareness about online privacy. It’s a good reminder about the importance of respecting privacy, safeguarding data, and enabling trust, according to the National Cybersecurity Alliance. In honor of this educational endeavor, below are five issues in the data privacy and cybersecurity space that businesses may see trending in 2024.
1. Cybersecurity Rules by the SEC and the EU — Both the Securities and Exchange Commission’s public company cybersecurity disclosure and breach notification rules as well as the implementation of the EU NIS 2 Directive will drive increased focus from management and the board on cybersecurity risks, preventive measures, and incident response. Expect to see another year of growing enforcement activities in the breach space, including scrutiny of representations made by public and critical infrastructure companies about their security practices.
