The proliferation of remote technology in the courtroom during the pandemic has sparked a push to more permanently adopt the use of what has come to be known as advanced communications technology. Most of the state Supreme Court procedural rules committees are in the midst of proposing ways to integrate ACT into the courts long-term, with the criminal committee standing apart in its abstention.

Five of the eight committees submitted proposed rules for comment following a June 2021 report from the Pennsylvania Conference of Trial Judges outlining best practices for the use of ACT. The report made specific recommendations for civil litigation, criminal proceedings, family court, juvenile court, orphans court and minor court. Of the corresponding committees, criminal was the only one that did not subsequently propose a rule on ACT.
