A long-running spat between a D.C.-based personal injury law firm and a former partner may need to go to D.C. Superior Court to resolve a dispute over who has ownership of a Google marketing account.

The dispute highlights the need for employers and employees to clearly establish who owns logins to digital work assets as they become more common in the workplace. Whether it’s calendars, contact lists, email inboxes or, as in this case, marketing products, clarifying “who has the rights to access what,” or securing access via deletion or credential removal, is an easy way to avoid litigation after an employee offboards.
