New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office said Monday that the robocall company allegedly at the center of a campaign to misinform Black voters in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election should not be allowed to extinguish a civil suit seeking millions in damages.

The filing, which came in response to a letter by Robert Mahanian and his firm Message Communications Inc., set up what could be another high-profile legal fight over the scope of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a 1990s-era law that offers interactive computer service providers broad protections from lawsuits over content posted to their platforms.
