While some U.S. officials and lawmakers are pushing for a national privacy law, or regulations that more closely align with Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Department of Justice’s top privacy enforcer is taking a much different route.

“There is an argument that we already have a comprehensive law,” said Peter Winn, the DOJ’s acting chief privacy and civil liberties officer. Winn, who was speaking at the “The Next Paradigm: Privacy Governance in the New Era” keynote address of the virtual Legalweek(year) conference, made the case that the United States not only has an adequate privacy and cyber approach, but its approach is far better than the one Europe has undertaken.
