Technology-assisted review has come a long way since its early introduction as predictive coding. Although TAR may still broadly refer to almost any manner of technical assistance in document review for e-discovery, more narrowly it tends to refer to techniques that involve the use of technology to replicate the decision a human expert would make about the classification or category of a document.

While earlier versions of TAR—1.0 and 2.0—still have their merits, the latest generation, TAR 3.0, is worth exploring to ensure the right approach is chosen for each specific discovery need.
