The European Commission has launched a formal investigation into whether Amazon has breached EU antitrust rules by abusing its dominant market position by “distorting competition” and harming smaller merchants.
In a statement, the Commission said it takes particular issue with the fact that the online retail giant “systematically relies” on hidden data connected to independent sellers that sell on its marketplace, which it then uses to the benefit of its own retail business in competing with those third party sellers.
