Regulators, counsel and some organizations are encouraging companies to air out their dirty laundry. Specifically, they say companies shouldn’t hoard information regarding the cyberthreats and cybersecurity challenges they are facing under the guise that such information could provide a competitive advantage to their peers.

Notably in late 2018, Bradford Willke, a top official in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, stressed that “cybersecurity, infrastructure security is not a competitive advantage,” according to CyberScoop. Willke’s comments were made during an overall push by the DHS to encourage more U.S. companies to closely work together to bolster their networks against evolving threats. According to a recent Experian survey, his advice didn’t fall on deaf ears.
