Alternative legal service providers have law firms on their heels to figure out how to compete against these lower-cost rivals and how to work with them to keep clients happy. 

The disruption created by the $10.7 billion ALSP industry was a big topic at Legalweek New York Jan. 29-31, where close to 8,000 legal professionals from around the globe gathered to explore new technologies, business innovation and the industry’s future.

While at the conference, Legal Speak sat down with Bill Deckelman and Jae Um to get their insight on the impact that the growing ALSP industry is having on traditional client-law firm dynamic. Deckelman is general counsel at DXC Technology Co., which  made a big splash about 18 months ago when it contracted with United Lex, an ALSP,  to outsource a big chunk of its legal work.

Um, an ALSP expert, recently joined Baker McKenzie as the law firm’s director of pricing strategy. She founded the legal industry consultancy Six Parsecs and previously worked in legal operations and strategy roles at Seyfarth Shaw.
