Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Hogan Lovells and Linklaters are among the firms to have been shortlisted for International Law Firm of the Year at The Asia Legal Awards.

Also vying for the showcase category at February’s ceremony are Baker & McKenzie, Davis Polk & Wardwell, Paul Hastings and Sidley Austin.

The awards, which are hosted by The Asian Lawyer in association with sister titles Legal Week, China Law & Practice and The American Lawyer, take place on 22 February at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong.

They recognise the region’s landmark deals, best-performing law firms and standout partners. Six ‘In-house Counsel of Distinction’ are also honoured.

Shortlisted deals in the M&A category include Uber China’s $35bn (£28.5) merger with Didi, Softbank’s $31bn (£25.2bn) acquisition of ARM Holdings and Tata Power’s $1.4bn (£1.1bn) acquisition of Welspun Renewables.

M&A Firm of the Year sees US firms Davis Polk & Wardwell and Paul Hastings line up against Korean duo Bae Kim & Lee and Kim & Chang, China’s Han Kun Law Offices, WongPartnership Singapore and King & Wood Mallesons.

Meanwhile, magic circle duo Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Linklaters will lock horns with Hogan Lovells, Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, Kim & Chang and China’s Fangda Partners in the finance category.

Last year’s winners included Kirkland & Ellis, which was named International Law Firm of the Year, and Korean outfit Yulchon (pictured), which was named Asian Law Firm of the Year.
