(L-R): Awards host David Mitchell; Swinton’s Eimear McCartan, Jessica Holden-Brown, Susan Dennehy, Matthew Hardaker and Adam Farooq; awards judge James Blendis

Finalists: Credit Agricole, CYBG (highly commended), ICAP

Swinton Insurance’s legal department was only set up 18 months ago. “To have broken in and established themselves over such a short period of time is a big ask,” said one of the judges. “And you can see there’s a lot of engagement from the client.”

The team has facilitated the business to self-serve, through regular surgeries on topical issues, developing and monitoring a comprehensive legal intranet page, providing guidance notes on subjects including termination of contracts, service levels and disputes.

Swinton’s legal team also created a simple contract sign-off form, a contract safe for supplier contracts and a precedent library.

On top of this, the team developed close relationships with the law firms on its panel and also used secondees.

Swinton has a sister company Covea, which they worked closely with to create and build a group legal function.

In the wake of the Brexit vote, the legal team also gave guidance and direction to Swinton, which has a French parent company.

Hill Dickinson associate Daniel Collin said: “The team is innovative and constantly thinks of new ways to assist the business, including targeted legal training and updates, internal policy writing, developing risk registers for other teams.”
