As the transformation of the legal market steps up a gear, those firms that have so far refused to acknowledge the changes are being forced to rethink their strategies. Neil Cameron reports

The Watergate scandal has had a profound influence on me. It is a perfect example of the phenomenon known as ‘group think’. In this case a close-knit group of people convinced themselves that what was actually immoral and illegal was really the right thing to do. Their logic appears to have been as follows:
- the institution of the presidency is endangered;
- our proposed response is good for the presidency;
- what is good for the presidency is good for the country;
- therefore, what we are doing is right and lawful.
