You don't need to be a sociologist to have spotted that the pace of social change has been rapid in recent years. Informal cohabitation without marriage, including starting a family together, has become common in many parts of the world. It is a phenomenon that would have shocked our great-grandparents and probably our grandparents. Perhaps even more eye-catching is the more recent trend to recognise gay and lesbian relationships in law. Barely a week goes by without some new jurisdiction tackling this issue.
