In Roman mythology, Janus is the two-faced god who looks both to the past and to the future, the god of beginnings and of transitions. Today, ‘Janus-faced' is a pejorative term implying hypocrisy and duplicity, but historically he is a noble figure presiding over change and transitions from the old to the new; the god of new beginnings and motion forward; the graceful master of time's one-way arrow towards the future.
