The past 18 months have been a transitional period for Apax-owned Travelex, and there is no-one who feels that more keenly than general counsel James Birch.

As the company takes measures to reduce its debt and expand its global footprint, Birch has led on a number of consecutive high-status deals, kickstarted by the £290m disposal of Travelex’s card programme management business to MasterCard in the summer of 2010. The deal was signed in December 2010, by which time Birch and his team had already started work on Travelex’s £606m sale of its global business payments division to Western Union.
