Portugal is a small but open economy. It is dependent on foreign investment, mainly from the rest of Europe. The majority of law firms are small, with local lawyers advising on small, local transactions. There are but a few larger Portuguese law firms that operate on an international basis that have the capacity to offer national and international clients a full-service experience and sophisticated, highly-trained and highly-expert lawyers. It is among these law firms that referral work is divvied up.
