Ritvik Lukose describes how the local recruitment market has been shaped by the changing Indian legal scene

The law firm segment in India can be divided into three broad categories: (i) The large (by India standards) firms have between 100 and 500-plus lawyers across the country, with offices in all major cities. These national firms include Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co, AZB & Partners, J Sagar Associates (JSA), Luthra & Luthra, Trilegal and Khaitan & Co, among others. (ii) Mid-size firms with between 30 and 100 lawyers across two or three cities in India including Nishith Desai Associates, ALMT Legal, Majmudar & Co, S&R Associates, Bharucha & Partners, Tatva Legal, Phoenix Legal, HSA Advocates and others. (iii) Boutique firms, which are typically one-city players with less than 30 lawyers in total. These include Talwar Thakore & Associates, Poovayya & Co, Platinum Partners, Lexygen, Alliance Legal and Advaya Legal.
