It was 1996, and the country was preparing for unprecedented competition within the gas supply market with the break up of British Gas. Behind the scenes, Centrica’s pre-appointed chief executive Sir Roy Gardner asked Grant Dawson, whom he had worked alongside at former telecoms group Standard Telephones and Cables (STC), if Dawson would join him as general counsel to help effect the demerger of the almost iconic British company.
