It remains a continuing puzzle to many that in the US, Continental Europe and Asia the role of lawyers outside the legal sector is substantially greater than in the UK. In all of these regions, successful lawyers play a significant role in government, businesses and the wider community and often do so at the same time as continuing their role with their law firms – often for 15 or 20 years beyond the time when many UK lawyers retire.
