“Lawyers can only provide legal solutions for legal problems, which often will not be of best use to the person needing help. Our measures target legal aid at the people who will need legal support most, and at the most serious cases. Legal aid will continue to be available in many types of cases including where someone is at risk of serious violence or losing their liberty or their home, or where children may be taken into care. We want people facing serious problems to be aware of their options so they can choose the most suitable way forward for them, which will not always be to take legal action. Mediation, for example, can be cheaper, quicker, and deliver better outcomes in a less traumatic way in many cases. And if a lawyer’s help is still required, a range of alternative sources of help including ‘no win no fee’ type deals are available for many types of case without burdening the taxpayer.”
