Funny how it’s often the “non-stories” that seem to attract the most readers and comments. The latest evidence of this trend is a story based on Legal Week research which found Oxbridge graduates made up 38% of magic circle trainees over the last two years (approaching half of the trainees at Slaughter and May and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer). One strong-viewed reader posted: “Of course, the magic circle will look to Oxbridge as, by their very nature, they produce the best graduates.”
To which multiple posts proffering competing views ensued: “The worst lawyer I’ve ever met was an Oxford graduate,” hit back one easily wounded soul. “I myself am not Oxbridge, I went to UCL and got very good marks – and I simply don’t see why that should count for anything today and think it counts for too much in getting a training contract.”
