Courtney Sturges reveals how she got her foot in the door at Linklaters

When I started my degree at St Andrews in International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies, I was unsure which career path I wanted to follow. It was not until two-and-a-half years into my degree when I began thinking more seriously about a career that I realised law was for me. Work experience at a small, not-for-profit organisation, in a film production company and with a city council member helped me learn what I wanted in a career and, more importantly, what I didn’t want. During a further placement at a law firm in New York, I learned what lawyers actually do on a day-to-day basis and other basics, such as what a case file contains, how a case evolves and what the inside of a courtroom looks like. Later, work with a UK regional law firm helped solidify my growing conviction that a career in law was right for me.
