Herbert Smith has promoted 13 lawyers to its partnership, the firm announced today (6 May).

The top 10 City firm’s London headquarters have received the bulk of the promotions, with seven new partners. The rest are split across the firm’s international network with Moscow, Hong Kong, Paris, Jakarta, Shanghai and Dubai each gaining one new partner.

The promotions demonstrate the firm’s commitment to its corporate practice despite the downturn, with the group receiving the lion’s share of new partners – with eight lawyers made up. Elsewhere, the litigation and arbitration group gains two new partners, while the finance, real estate and employment, pensions and incentives teams gain one new partner apiece.

Of the 13 new partners, more than half – seven – are female.

The promotions round represents a significant decrease from last year, when Herbert Smith made up 18 new partners, including eight in London.

The additions take the firm’s global partnership headcount to 252.

Herbert Smith senior partner David Gold commented: “This is an extremely able group of lawyers whose practice-building strengths we will particularly prize in the current environment. The spread of these new partners across Europe, the Middle East and Asia also reflects the strategic priority we are giving to the firm’s internationalisation. In addition it is very good to see a large number of our talented female lawyers coming through.”

In addition to the partner promotions, the firm has also promoted two senior associates in its litigation and arbitration group to of counsel. Herbert Smith’s move leaves Clifford Chance and Simmons & Simmons as the only top 10 City firms yet to announce their partner promotions.
