Transport for London (TfL) has promoted Andrea Clarke to the post of legal director, succeeding Gareth John, who joined facilities management company Sodexo in January.

Clarke, who took up the role in March, was previously manager of TfL’s commercial law team, having joined London Regional Transport – which became TfL in 2000 – in 1996.

Her new role will see her head up the 30-strong legal team which principally handles commercial and infrastructure projects and employment and property matters. Clarke will report to general counsel Howard Carter.

To date, no decision has been taken on a replacement for Clarke.

During John’s tenure as TfL legal director, he revamped the organisation’s panel of advisers, awarding places on the 12-strong roster to firms such as Eversheds, Clifford Chance and Travers Smith. The next panel review is due in 2011.

Earlier this month (14 April) John appointed Eversheds as Sodexo’s sole employment law adviser for work in the UK and Ireland.

TfL’s legal arm currently has 43 members of staff. In addition, TfL entities London Underground and Crossrail have separate legal divisions, numbering 66 and three staff respectively.

In February it emerged that the company is poised to make efficiency savings which could see a number of its legal staff made redundant.
