Senior Italian lawyers are lobbying to reform national legislation that could undermine the country's developing in-house legal community. Attention is focused on a reform bill before the Italian legislature - the first overhaul of rules for the legal profession in 70 years - that is feared will enforce a second-class status on in-house lawyers.One provision would require lawyers who stay in-house for more than five years to retake the Bar exam if they return to private practice. Another controversial provision would restrict in-house lawyers from giving legal advice to their clients. Similar legislation has been introduced in previous sessions of parliament, but none has progressed as far as this one.
