Recently-promoted Sarah Wright recalls the transition from senior associate to partner and the effect it had on her responsibilities and relationships

It is incredible how quickly time has passed since May 2008 when I was made a partner in the intellectual property (IP) team at Olswang. While each firm has its own partnership application process, it is universally accepted that it is an exhausting time for the candidates. For me, it was very similar to what I experienced during the lead-up to my wedding. You feel excited but nervous. You are focused on your goal, but at the same time slightly daunted at what lies ahead. The build-up to the big day is intense and the process gruelling. When it finally arrives, the celebrations are fantastic and the feeling of relief immense. But the celebrations are over very quickly – and it is only then that the reality of your new role becomes apparent. You then appreciate that far from reaching the finishing line, you are in fact just starting out on a journey which will hopefully be lots of fun, but you know will involve lots of hard work as well.
