The economic downturn is likely to lead to an increase in the movement of partners and assistants between law firms. Firms cutting back on underperforming fee earners and redundancies will make up the majority of the moves, but the number of strongly performing fee earners or teams moving away from firms hit by the recession could well increase too. Partners in underperforming firms but who lead teams in practice areas that flourish in a downturn or which are at least recession-resistant could be tempted to engineer a move of the team to a new home.
