This blog isn’t really about Clifford Chance’s (CC’s) market-jolting decision to make 70-80 of its City lawyers redundant, although the firm’s recent actions have been perhaps the best illustration of the topic in question.
That issue is honesty - specifically, honesty on the part of law firms about the fact that they are making their staff redundant. And having read numerous posts on legalweek.com and discussed CC’s move with a number of rival managing partners, it’s striking the extent to which rivals are giving the firm credit for being open about its policy rather than disguising its move via ‘stealth lay-offs’.
