Career Clinic: How can I get out of going to the Xmas party?
"I'm a junior associate at a London firm and our office Christmas party is coming up soon. I feel like I'm being pressured into attending, but I'm not that close to any of my colleagues, and I can't stand the partner who heads up our team. I'm not a big drinker and I really dislike all the forced joviality at these sort of events."I've not told anyone that I don't want to go, I've just been non-committal - but am I obliged to show up? Should I be honest about the fact I'd rather not go, or should I just lie and pretend I'm ill on the day?"

“I’ve not told anyone that I don’t want to go, I’ve just been non-committal – but would it be a mistake to not go? Should I be honest about the fact I’d rather not attend, or should I just lie and pretend I’m ill on the day?”
