Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer capital markets partner Chris Mort is reportedly stepping down from his role as chairman of Newcastle United Football Club. The firm has not confirmed when the former co-head of the leisure department will return to the firm. Mort took a sabbatical last July to act as deputy chairman for the club, appointed by new owner and longstanding client Mike Ashley. The two cooperated in rehiring Kevin Keegan to manage the team, replacing former manager Sam Allardyce last year.

Mort switched from Freshfields to the football club in July 2007 after taking a leave of absence from the City giant, although his eventual return to the firm’s leisure practice was expected.
